Our History
The Swift Current Fair has been a community staple since the early days of settlement. Initially held at the fairgrounds on what is now the Chinook Golf Course, the annual event ran from 1910 to 1922, attracting large crowds with a variety of activities, including harness racing, rodeos, and competitions in baking, cow milking, and track and field. The fair featured a 500-person grandstand, stables, kitchens, and eating areas, and even included special train service from the CPR to bring in visitors. However, after WWI and the Spanish Flu led to a decline in attendance, the fair was discontinued for several years.
In the 1930s, amidst the Great Depression, a group of young citizens from Swift Current revived the spirit of the community by forming the Kinetic Club. In 1938, they organized the first Frontier Days fair, a celebration of Dominion Day (now Canada Day), with events such as livestock and produce competitions, beard growing contests, and baking challenges. The fair attracted over 25,000 visitors, becoming an annual tradition. The Kinetic Club, known for its hardworking and spirited members, continued to play a significant role in local events until 1950, when the responsibility for the fair was passed on to the Swift Current Chamber of Commerce, and later the Swift Current Agricultural and Exhibition Association, which successfully continued organizing Frontier Days from 1954 onward.
